I bought an STM32F103CBT6 board from aliexpress because I found it on a quick search to be Arduino compatible.
As it arrived I followed all the steups on Rogers instrutions in my Win7 x64 PC.
After that was done I chose in the Arduino IDE the board “Generic STM32F103C series”, as variant “STM32F103CB”, changed the CPU frequency and the upload method for all cases.
I tried to Upload just with an USB-cable (no FTDI Adapter involved because some Instructions I found with that didnt work)
I always got the Error:

As Port I had chosen something like “Com32 (Maple Serial)” – I’m not sure what it was exactly called.
After I found someone with a similar issue and it was given the advice to select “Maple (Rev 3)” as board I tried that.
It compiled and loaded the sketch (blink) to the board and it worked.
BUT: Since then the Port (Com32 (Maple Serial) ) is gone and I have no option to do any serial communication to the board via the Serial Monitor of the Arduino IDE.
I also found this “device” (something with maple or DFU) in the hardware manager of my Windows PC.
Now I cant see anything anymore.
I can still upload sketches, but there is NO Port selected in the IDE.
It seems to chose a “hidden” Port that I cant find and not communicate with.
If I upload another blink sketch, I get:

This worked with 72MHz and the Original Bootloader to show the COM Port (COM32 (Maple Mini) again.
What is the 48MHz (Slow – with USB) and the Booloader for?
I flashed the 72MHz also with USB.
After flashing this, I can not flash the Bootloader 2.0 sketch.

But, the sketch always worked for me. But perhaps some vendors started to lock the bootloader flash pages.
It even better should have been “setup of Maple Mini”.
I tried the Sketch a couple of times and always get the same error.
I also the method posted on this site, but the stm32flash.exe just puts out a cmd window for 100ms and is not working on my PC.
I also downloaded “STM’s own Serial uploader” that Roger liked on that site.
I had no idea how to connect it so I connected it firstly via USB and tried with 115200 baud and even parity but the flash_loader_demo_v2.8.0 gave me a “No response from target” message.
Then I put the board into serial bootloader mode, by pressing and hold reset and but=32, release reset, and then release but=32.
Same message from the Tool.
I then connected everythink with a USB<=>Serial bridge like in the blog I posted.
On both, the normal mode and the serial bootloader mode I get “no response from target” messages.
Is there anywhere a good guide how to flash the bootloader 2.0 ?
Note, that on the maple mini, beside connecting BOOT0 (PB8) to “high”, you have to connect BOOT1 pin (PB2) to GND in order to work.

I wonder how easy it would be to add an unlock instruction to the sketch (Roger?!)
I didn’t write the updater sketch. I think perhaps @victor_pv wrote it.
I’d have to add this to the bottom of a very long To Do list, so in reality I doubt I’d ever have time to do make that change
After you get the normal error, it will give you an option to clear the option bytes, which clears the write protection.
After that, you need to reboot and run it again, and the second time should be able to program the bootloader.

I accepted both questions with “Y”.
After this the board looks dead and I have to uplug it and replug it to the USB-socket (pushing reset on the board doesnt work and the COMport is missing)
After replug it to the USB socket, I get the same messages like before.

Citing the Wiki site:

In your case, It should be COM8 (without underscore).
Let see this time what kind of error message you get, if the flash is write_protected.

I also tried it with no connection to BOOT0 (PB8) and set it manually (with reset and but=32) into serial bootloader mode with the same error.
For uploading the bootloader, you must manually connect BOOT0 (PB8) to 3.3V and BOOT1 (PB2) to GND, otherwise it won’t work.
After you have done this, press the reset button. Then try to upload.
I connected like this
Maple Mini <——> USB<=>Serial Adapter (CP2012)
GND <——> GND
VCC <——> 3.3V
RX1 (25) <——> RX
TX1 (26) <——> TX
BOOT1 (2) <——> GND
BOOT2 (but) <——> 3.3V
After connecting the Adapter (with connected Maple Mini) no LED is on so I think that its in the correct mode.
After using “the utility” (flash_loader_demo_v2.8.0.exe) I get always the same error like posted before (see attachment).
And, btw, there is no BOOT2, (but) is BOOT0. And it is connected to the second button on the board, next to “reset” button.
So you could just connect BOOT1 (pin 2, or PB2) to GND and then:
– press (but) button and keep pressing
– press “reset” button
– release “reset” button
– wait 1 second
– release (but) button.
Now you can upload the bootloader.
And on my Serial adapter the TX must be connected to TX.
Maybe the manufacturer thought it would be easyer for idiots to connect it right
The method with the button pressing you descriped has already been done like I said (from here), but this would just be the same like connectint the BOOT0 and BOOT1 like you said.

I would just disable write protection, and then try the bootloader upload with stm32flash utility.

I did click on “Edit otopn bytes” and did something there and after I was not successfull, I did it again with the “Disable write protection”.
After that, the board was dead and I read that you updated the “locked bootloader sketch” – so unluckyly I could not test it and verify if its working.
But as I can see there is a “;” missing in line 342 so it would be “flashUnlock();”
The next thing I did was downloading the bootloader to the Maple Mini.
After that the LED was flashing again (screenshot in attachment).
As my PC didnt find it (Arduino IDE was not showing the COM port) I tried to flash the new updater sketch of you @victor_pv with no COM port selected but with bootloader 2.0 selected.
First it didnt work, then I selected the “Maple (Rev 3)” and it uploaded the sketch but still didnt show its COM port.
Then I selected again the “Maple Mini” and it stoped the upload at the point again, where I had to reset the board manually (reset button) to contuine the upload.
After this the COM port showed again and I could communicate with the board via the Serial Monitor.
I got the message “Congratulations. You have already updated to this version of the bootloader”.
So it finally works ![]()
But to check your new sketch Viktor, I bought another Maple Mini from this seller and will tell you here (when it arrives – in about 3-4 weeks), if your sketch is working ![]()

Well I’m pretty sure that I did only go to “Edit option bytes” but didnt know what to do there, so I went back and “DUSABLE WRITE PROTECTION”. Then I started again and did the “Download to device” an selected the bootloader.
BUT to get there I had to “Remove Protection” before. It was the first window after connecting to the device (screenshot done and attached).

So I have done that and flashed the original bootloader to it.
I verified its is the original one by flashing the Arduino blink example to it an chose the original bootloader.
I uploaded the sketch of you @viktor but only get this massege again:

I thought disabling the read protection was for the whole of flash and also erases it, so the code that was in there could not be read as it had been erased.
I can’t quite see how you could have a system where each page of flash had its own read protection, unless each page could only be read by code running from within that page, and I don’t think the STM32 has a feature quite as complex as that.
Overall, it sounds like the company who is loading the bootloader has no idea what the bootloader does, and that the device should not be read protected.

You have no option but to erase and reflash using a USB to Serial adaptor or a STLink.
The vendor must have bought a blank Maple Mini and flashed and read protected it. (Strange thing to do)
I notice that the aliexpress listing is “no longer available”

Can the updater check for read protection ?
It seems a bit odd that it was initially possible to upload the updater sketch, but impossible now to overwrite it.
Perhaps the STM32 knows whether a flash page is blank and allows one upload even if read protection is set.
But that sounds like a bit security loophole, as you could upload code to read out the flash into a blank flash page, and then somehow trick the code into running that code.
On a similar subject.
The nRF51 has a bug in its silicon, which allows some GDB functions to work on read protected devices.
In that you can still read and set the contents of registers including the PC.
So you can change the PC and get the code in flash to run any part of the flash, and people have exploited this loophole to find and single step instructions to and managed to read the contents of the protected flash.
I briefly looked at this, but the STM32 does not seem to have that bug.
So I’d be surprised if you could flash a blank page if the device is read protected

And I’m happy that I’m not crazy, cause I was sure I had done exactly the same, but it didnt work before ![]()
