Guys,

FYI.
Windows users

KB3035583 appears to install nagware for WIndows 10, including adding an icon to the system tray icons.

I’m currently trying to remove this junk from my machine.

Edit.

I uninstalled that particular update and the nagware appears to have gone

Windows on description of this update seem vague at best

https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/kb/3035583

Update enables additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications in Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 SP1

Weasel words for nagware.

I’m not sure what this says about Windows 10, if they have to advertise it in Windows 7 and 8 to get people to install it

My understanding was that were going to allow non-Genuine Windows Authorised users (ahem) to upgrade to Windows 10 for free. I wonder what they’re going to nobble in 10 to make everyone have to shell out continually for cloud-based services.

Ray

I have all my machines set to manual update, I just didn’t realise that MS was up to their old tricks again, rolling out updates that are not a fix for an issue.

I normally only install the “important” updates, and I don’t take the driver updates, as I had an issue with a automatic video driver update which caused blue screen of death, and it took me a whole to figure out what the problem was, and to roll back the update.

I don’t even have auto download turned on, as the machine could end up downloading literally gigabytes of unwanted updates – which is a big issue with my internet data quota for me, as I have more machines running windows than an average user ;-)

I will install windows 10 on a separate HD when its available, as I will need it for work, I.e compatibility testing, but its unlikely I will roll it out to all my machines, unless it proves to be better than win 8.1 which I am forced to run on a newer laptop as it won’t even boot a Win 7 installer disk. :-(

I’m a cheapskate

I’m not willing to pay the additional $20 per month to get unlimited downloads.

I’m sure I can make do with 120G per month if I try hard.

As a follow up

I’ve noticed this morning, that this update is now been raised in priority to Important, and hence most systems may automatically install it.

IMHO. This sort of thing really show Microsoft in a bad light, because I normally presume that “Important” update are to fix things that are important e.g. security fixes.

This is not a security fix, or even a bug fix.

If you kill the GWX.exe process, that’s it the one responsible for that Win10 aanounce, it restarts after an hybernate, so there is a check.

Maybe I can erase the C:\Windows\System32\GWX folder …..

Hmm.. replace GWX.exe with a quick C “do nothing, exit 0” program and set it read only would be my advice… or switch to Linux of course.

It was possible to uninstall this update when it first came out, so it still may be possible even now its being pushed as an Important update.
