as topic: It looks like that “off topic” is the honey pot for spammers, at least the are honest to post it as “off topic” ;)

20 post minum to have permissión to post in this section.

That should do the trick, as spammers usually post their spam soon after their registration.

Guys

It does seem interesting that this is the place that the SpamBots choose to post in.

It must be in the algorithm. I did some research last night and its quite hard to combat, unless I disable links, etc, which we need.

I’m going to try to put in some additional anti spam questions, e.g.

What decimal number is 101?
What decimal number is 0x0A?
What country was the Arduino concept developed in ?

Can anyone suggest some other questions that spam bots would be unlikely to be able to answer, but anyone interested in Arduino etc would be able to.

Edit

I’ve switch from Capta to the question and answer system. I”d like to have had both, but PHPBB doesn’t seem to support this without installing some plugins.
So I’ll give this a go for a while and see if its adequate

Ahh.. the fine art of capcha. None of the capchas I have used are 100% spam proof, simply because there are people who get paid to answer captch questions (which sounds like the worst job in the world to me).. I even wrote my own captch in PHP a few years back for the company website of my then employer (even that was far from perfect). You could try some of these… http://tympanus.net/codrops/2009/09/22/ … a-sources/

@ahull

Well at the risk of preventing legitimate users from registering, I guess we could come up with more and more technical questions

I think the problem with all the image based captchas is that anyone can do them, including the army of people who get paid less than cent to each captach answered.

If we put techie questions then hopefully the sort of people that are working for those wages won’t be able to answer the questions.

Some suggestions:
“What is the actual RAM size on the maple mini with the new bootloader?”
“What arduino pin number has PA3 on the nucleo?”
“Which pin has no PWM functionality: D3,D8 or D22 on the VET board?”
“How may hours a day spend Roger with this project?”
“How many times do you have read the install wiki?”

I think questions with suggestions and easy to google without clicking in the result link will be ok (answer must be written in text, not combo nor radio inputs).

Tell us you are only a human, and not a sophisticated killer machine from skynet by responding the following question: “how many RAM has the STM32F103C8T6? (more than 12k and less than 28k)”.

The spected answer in the text box should be “20K”.

There are only 10 types of people, those that can answer Roger’s questions, and those that can’t ;)

LOL

My wife had to explain victors posting to me.

I must be spending too much time looking at the bootloader setup code, as hex and binary seem to be second nature to me.

I recall working with someone about 20 years ago, who worked on systems that for some reason worked in 4 bit nibbles, so he ended up being a whiz at octal numbers. Which seemed quite bizarre even at the time ;-)

But seriously guys, it sounds like you think I set the bar too high.

I need something to reduce the spam, as we were getting several new accounts a day, and the only effective countermeasure is questions that your average spambot cyborg can’t easily answer.

Besides the joke, I was suggesting a question like that, but now I see that would have left even you out of the forums!!
